Research

The two JRA activities are WP8 (Improvement and equipment of irradiation and test beam lines) and WP9 (Advanced infrastructure for detector R&D).

Most of the improvements to existing beamlines and irradiation facilities are carried out within WP8. Refurbishment of beamlines at CERN (H6 and H8 lines), DESY and at LNF, as well as the CERN AIDA Grant Agreement No : 262025 8 irradiation facility at the PS and the Gamma Irradiation Facility (GIF++) at the SPS (CERN), are carried out within WP8. These are upgraded in terms of radiation intensity and active area, and with modern detector systems that allows detector R&D tasks to be carried out. Coordination of the test beam activity and development of common data acquisition systems are provided as a service for users. Additionally, qualification of components after irradiation is to be kept centrally in a common database.

WP9 develops infrastructures for specific detector R&D tasks, including infrastructures for the testing of gaseous tracking detectors, particle telescopes for precision vertex detectors and assessment of the concept of granular calorimetry (where silicon tracking and energy sampling are carried out simultaneously), of particular importance for the LC community. All of these facilities are crucial to develop these detector technologies and concepts beyond the current state-of-the-art, and are to be used to test the performance of these detectors under realistic beam conditions.
